Wood-infesting Insect Identification Guide

There are a variety of insects that infest structural timber. Identification of the insect species is usually based on the characteristics of holes that are made and the material (frass) that is found in the holes or tunnels in the wood. The adult or larval stages can also be used to identify the type of infestation but these are rarely seen by homeowners. Below is the start of an online guide to assist you in identifying only the more common wood infesting insects. Please contact your local Extension Agent for additional information.
